How can I cat-proof my home?

Just as a mobile toddler can wreak havoc on your home and get hurt in the process, so can your cat. Here are just a few steps to cat-proof your home and help prevent mischief.

Keep your cat safe and your home intact

  • That passing bird may be irresistible and kitty may lunge, even from an open window or through balcony railings. Use screens on windows and keep an eye out when you're on the balcony.
  • Cats can swallow yarn, ribbons, tinsel, rubber bands, paperclips, pins, small toy parts and just about any other bite size morsel that can lead to vomiting and an unexpected trip to the vet. Give her a variety of suitable toys so she won't go looking for inappropriate stringy and bite sized items at playtime.
  • Often irresistible for a quick nibble and dig, houseplants are fun but can be poisonous to cats (not to mention a big 'ole mess). Deter digging by simply putting plants out of reach or covering the soil with aluminum foil.
  • The dreaded furniture scratching can be quite pesky. Use one of the many products geared towards deterring scratching such as nail guards, sprays and sticky tapes. Also remember to keep her nails trimmed!
